Nuggs: Vegan Chicken Nugget Review

Nuggs are a very popular vegan chicken nugget that’s advertised all over the internet. I actually bought some to try because of the fun ads and great price. Their tag line is “don’t be a chicken” which I found absolutely hilarious. Sadly, if prepared in a healthier oil-free way, these Nuggs tasted about as good as cardboard.

I really wanted to love these. As a child, my parents struggled to get me to eat meat because I didn’t like the taste. The only meat products I ate were crappy sausages and chicken nuggets from McDonald’s. What did both have in common? They are both made of the lowest quality meat. But hey, I loved them and my parents were glad I was consuming protein. So I hoped that trying these Nuggs would help me relive my childhood… They did not.

While they looked exactly like real chicken nuggets, they tasted nothing like meat. Or anything really. The first time I tried them air-fried and I was not impressed. But the air fryer is known for drying things out so I blamed that for the lack of flavor. Next, I tried them in the oven with minimum oil since the nuggets themselves are already far from healthy.

I Was Not Impressed

Even oven-cooked, these nuggets fell flat. For my last try I fried them on the stove with a little bit more oil. This was the least disgusting way to eat them, but they still sucked. I’m so sorry Nuggs. I love that you want the world to eat less animals and I love the humor in your advertisement. But I personally didn’t enjoy your product. I did love the eco-friendly packaging though! I’m hoping that others liked it more and perhaps, they prepared it better than I did!

If you are looking for vegan nuggets, I recommend the Gardein ones. They taste amazing and come with yummy sauces to spice things up. Again, none of these options are healthy. But neither are real chicken nuggets. These are comfort foods great for a special occasion, not as a part of a healthy, balanced diet. Before I leave you disappointed about Nuggs, here’s a video of meat eaters who didn’t hate them.
