The Breakdown by B.A. Paris: Book Review

The Breakdown by B.A. Paris Book Review

The Breakdown by B.A. Paris is my second book by the author of one of the most disturbing books I’ve read. Behind Closed Doors was an intense book full of darkness and twists. I expected no less from The Breakdown. It wasn’t quite as crazy but I may have set the bar too high. It was a great book that made me immediately order another on by B.A. Paris.

The Breakdown Synopsis

“Cass is having a hard time since the night she saw the car in the woods, on the winding rural road, in the middle of a downpour, with the woman sitting inside—the woman who was killed. She’s been trying to put the crime out of her mind; what could she have done, really? It’s a dangerous road to be on in the middle of a storm. Her husband would be furious if he knew she’d broken her promise not to take that shortcut home. And she probably would only have been hurt herself if she’d stopped.

But since then, she’s been forgetting every little thing: where she left the car, if she took her pills, the alarm code, why she ordered a pram when she doesn’t have a baby.

The only thing she can’t forget is that woman, the woman she might have saved, and the terrible nagging guilt.

Or the silent calls she’s receiving, or the feeling that someone’s watching her…”

What I Loved

Rating: 4.5 out of 5.

The protagonist is very relatable to me. She isn’t my favorite person but I can understand her fear because I have recently started to fear my own shadow. So her paranoia is dear to my heart although it’s a little embarrassing to admit. Other than that, I also liked the plot.

Although I managed to predict one major part of the story, there was still a lot that surprised me. One thing that I found particularly unique is how everything was explained in detail at the end. Sometimes I feel like book endings are not only rushed, but not explained enough. This makes them feel less realistic, so I appreciated that B.A. Paris wrote it all out.

What I Didn’t Love

I may have had unreasonable expectations after Behind Closed Doors set an insanely high bar. It took me a while to really get into the story and there were parts that just weren’t too exciting. The only reason I read it so quickly was because I knew what this author was capable of and refused to give up. If this was my first book by B.A. Paris, I may have taken longer to finish.

The Breakdown Summary

This was a great book with interesting twists. As readers, we weren’t sure if the protagonist was crazy or not for a while. I definitely recommend this book to anyone who likes psychological thrillers, but don’t ruin the experience by expecting this to be the best book ever.
