The Whisper Man by Alex North has been on my radar for a while. It was recommended for me on Goodreads and I was immediately intrigued by the cover. It took me a while to finally buy it and read it. I loved it so much and I’m now kicking myself for not reading it sooner. I realized that most of my favorite books are written by female authors. After reading this book, I am officially adding Alex North to my top favorite authors and I’m currently reading his other book, The Shadows.

The Whisper Man by Alex North Synopsis

“After the sudden death of his wife, Tom Kennedy believes a fresh start will help him and his young son Jake heal. A new beginning, a new house, a new town: Featherbank.

But Featherbank has a dark past. Twenty years ago, a serial killer abducted and murdered five residents. Until Frank Carter was finally caught, he was nicknamed “The Whisper Man,” for he would lure his victims out by whispering at their windows at night.

Just as Tom and Jake settle into their new home, a young boy vanishes. His disappearance bears an unnerving resemblance to Frank Carter’s crimes, reigniting old rumors that he preyed with an accomplice. Now, detectives Amanda Beck and Pete Willis must find the boy before it is too late, even if that means Pete has to revisit his great foe in prison: The Whisper Man. And then Jake begins acting strangely. He hears a whispering at his window.”

What I Loved

The way this book and the characters are written is somehow different in the best way possible. The story itself was also really special. A single father and his son dealing with the death of their wife and mother. There were so many different aspects that ended up flowing together seamlessly. There were no huge shocking twists, but things kept moving and the revelations were always exciting.

The protagonist. I don’t know if I’m going crazy, but there was something about the protagonist that made me fall in love with him. He seemed like such a well-rounded, self-reflective, sensitive man. I had to double check a few times that the book wasn’t written by a woman, because it seems like he is the man that all women are looking for. It was unique to see a character like this written by a male author. If he is at all a reflection of Alex North, then I love the author even more.

What I Didn’t Love

Sometimes the voice of Jake, the son, did seem a little too adult for his age. But as an adult without children, I may be wrong about this. However, it did stand out to me while I read. Also, there was a thing or two that seemed too coincidental. It made for a great story but wasn’t always realistic. All that being said, I loved this book so much and I wouldn’t change a thing. There are crazy coincidences in real life too, after all and not all children are the same!

Summary: The Whisper Man by Alex North

The Whisper Man by Alex North is an amazing book that was different from my usual reads. I couldn’t put it down and was mesmerized by the authors writing. The haunting story, unique characters and exciting climax will stay on in my memories for a very long time. The same evening I finished The Whisper Man I began reading The Shadows by the same author. I’m only halfway through but I’m loving every page!
