We visited Cottrell Brewing Company two weekends ago on a whim. Isaac and I live in Warwick, Rhode Island but we were already in Westerly for an outdoor baby shower. Then we decided to get some Deviant Donuts in Mystic. Somewhere in between Westerly, RI and Mystic, CT we found the Cottrell Brewery in Pawcatuck! There was outdoor seating, and it was sunny, so we couldn’t help ourselves.

About Cottrell Brewing Company

This is what it says on their website:

“I felt this desire to make better beer. While studying in London, I developed a passion for quality ales and when I returned to Connecticut with my family, I knew I wanted to leave consulting and turn my passion into a business. I worked hard to master my craft. My wife, Ann, and I opened the doors to Cottrell and on February 28, 1997, we rolled the first keg of Old Yankee Ale down Mechanic Street to our local watering hole, CC O’Brien’s.  Our mission was then, and is still now, to produce the best product that we can using fresh, natural, quality ingredients.

If you haven’t tried Cottrell , you are missing out on a uniquely brewed, quality product steeped in New England history and great taste. Cottrell is something I hold dear to my heart and I want to share it with the world.

Cheers,
Charlie Buffum
Owner & Brewer, Cottrell Brewing Co.”

Our Experience

We came on a cold but sunny day, and we were dressed warmly for an outdoor socially-distant family event. There was a lot of space to sit either inside or outside. We prefer to drink out beer outside anyway, so we sat outside. It was also warmer outside in the sun because the inside isn’t heated. So bring layers if you’re visiting!

The beer was really good! I’ve become somewhat of a picky beer drinker and I did not love the amber ale that I was so excited about. However, I absolutely loved the pilsner! Isaac wasn’t in love with the IPA he tried either but he also loved the pilsner. Honestly, it was so good that it’s worth making another trip down for us! And the staff was amazing.

Summary: Cottrell Brewing Company

Cottrell Brewing Company is located in a warehouse which is common for breweries in the USA. Despite not having much of a view, it has a great vibe. Plus it had great decorations and there is some awesome beer-themed art on the outside which I loved! My only complaint is that they serve the beers in plastic cups. Not only is that terrible for the environment, but I feel like it takes away from the beer tasting experience.
