We visited Shaidzon Beer Company last weekend. After getting the Rhode Island Brewery Passport, we’ve been on a mission to visit all 30+ breweries! We really enjoyed Shaidzon’s outdoor seating, and we even got to see a passing train. Take a look:

About Shaidzon Beer Company

““The sun was in my eyes so I thought ‘I need my shades on’.” The name was initially chosen as a place holder with made-up spelling to get the business started, but it won us over and never changed. Co-owners, Chip and Josh wanted an original name, but couldn’t come up with anything. On the absolute date where Chip was driving to Providence and it was time to register the brewery officially, it came to him in a blinding – of sorts- vision. The placeholder name has since stuck and the sun in our eyes has driven us to have our Shaidzon.

The connection between the two owners came long before. It started with fires on the beach around the turn of the century. The Shaidzon team first came together in the coastal village of Matunuck, RI through a mutual friend. Their paths went in separate directions for a number of years, but they stayed in contact and reconnected. A fortunate circumstance presented itself and with little hesitation, and a lot of work, the duo formed the Shaidzon Beer Company.”

The Brewery

After living in China and exploring Asia for two years, we fully expected Shaidzon to be an Asia-style brewery because of its name. We could not be more wrong! Their name is simply an alternative spelling to ‘shades on.’ It was a typical American brewery but with European-style outdoor seating. The indoor seating is currently not open, but they have plenty of heaters to keep you warm outside!

When we visited, we were surprised that there were only a few draft beer options. However, there were a LOT of canned beer options, including a Czech Pilsner. I’m generally not into canned beers, but the pilsner was quite good. However, it didn’t taste quite like the Pilsner Urquell that I’m accustomed to.

Finally, I was super excited to see that they have a female brewer! Julia Röder-Hanna actually lived and worked in Germany for six years, so I have her to thank for the pilsner that tastes (almost) like home. I can’t wait to come back and try more beers brewed by Julia!

Summary: Shaidzon Beer Company

We enjoyed visiting Shaidzon brewery, and we can’t wait to visit again when it’s even warmer. The outdoor seating was great, and the view of the train tracks was unique. After Apponaug Brewery, this is only the second place in Rhode Island that has the feel of a European-style beer garden.
