We just ordered our second Big Box of (Plant-Based) Meat, and we finally decided to write The Very Good Butchers review! I first discovered this Plant-Based Butchery a year ago in a Facebook ad. It said, ‘we butcher beans.’ I was intrigued by the products but intimidated by the price. But I finally bit the bullet and ordered myself their largest assorted box. Needless to say, we loved it, which is why we ordered our second box!
About The Very Good Butchers
The Very Good Butcher is a company based in Canada, although you can order their products in America too! What we love about them is the assortment of products, including vegan meats and cheeses. Before I dive into those, let me tell you a bit about the company:
“There’s a new butcher on the block – and we do things differently. Really. At The Very Good Butchers, we believe in butchering beans, not animals.
We’re on a mission to show that making good choices doesn’t mean sacrificing flavour. We want to make plant-based eating as approachable, nutritious, and delicious as possible by creating food that’s Very Good for people, animals, and the planet (while having a little fun along the way).”
I also really like that they try to be healthier than the more commonly known plant-based meats. I love myself a Beyond or Impossible Burger, but those are full of unhealthy chemicals.
“Fed up with the overly-processed meat alternatives available, our founders knew they could raise the plant-based bar. As trained chefs with years of experience, they set out to make the most delicious and nutritious plant-based meats they could, and in our humble opinion, they nailed it!.
After selling out the farmers markets on Denman Island, BC, our bean butchers knew they were onto something. They brought their magic beans to Victoria and opened the Canadian West Coasts’ first plant-based butchery.
A bajillion butchered beans, a Dragon’s Den Appearance, 15 new products, and the opening of a production facility later (all in 3 years!), and our (not so) little Butcher Shop is online and ready to put some Very Good food on your plate.”
The Products: The Very Good Butchers Review
I have tried all their meat products, except for the Vegan Stuffed Beast ($39.) This 1.3kg (2.8lbs) roast will feed between five and seven people depending on their hunger and is the perfect plant-based holiday turkey alternative. It is currently sold out, so even if you’re dying to try it, you would have to wait.
So far, I have only bought their Butcher Boxes. Although they sell all their products individually, I’m not about to order a set of four sausages all the way from Canada. However, once they are readily available in the USA, it will be a whole different story! Luckily, they have large boxes full of goodies, that I’m about to get to next…
The Butcher Boxes
As I already mentioned, we ordered A Big Box of (Plant-Based) Meat. Twice. It contains 28+ meals of food! We tend to go a little crazy with our vegan meat, so it usually lasts us less. However, it is just as unhealthy to overeat plant-based meat as it is meat made from animals. The box includes:
- 2 packs of Very Good Burgers
- 1 pack of Smokin’ Burgers
- 1 pack of Smokin’ Bangers
- 1 pack of Very British Bangers
- 2 packs of Taco Stuff’er
- 1 pack of BBQ Jackfruit
- 2 packs of Ribz
- 2 packs of Pepperoni
Personally, I find their bangers and pepperoni to be meh. But we also try to cook them a little healthier. With some more oil and condiments, I think they would be delicious. My favorite products are their Ribz and BBQ Jackfruit. My husband Isaac is obsessed with their Taco Stuff’er and burgers.
Overall, their meats are delicious and worth the price. If you consider a pack of Beyond burgers or sausages costing $7+, 12 packs of fake meat for $99 is a great deal.
If you don’t want to go all in, they have the Very Good Box for $50. It makes about 13+ meals and contains:
- 1 pack of The Very Good Burgers ($11.50)
- 1 pack of Smokin’ Burgers ($11.50)
- 1 pack of A Very British Banger ($9.50)
1 pack of Smokin’ Bangers ($9.50)
- 1 pack of Very Good Taco Stuff’er ($9.00)
- 1 pack of Pepperoni ($7.00)
I have not tried their cheeses yet because we still have some Spero Foods cream cheese in the fridge. Since the President of the Very Good Butchers used to work for Daiya, I’m sure it’s amazing. When I’m ready to try it, I’ll buy a variety pack for $60.
The Box of (Vegan) Cheese includes:
- 1 block of Ottima Mozza
- 1 block of Dill’ish with Garlic
- 1 block of Sharp & Sassy
- 1 block of Captain Pepper Jack
- 1 block of Good-Eh?
Summary: The Very Good Butchers Review
We’ve been better at actually using the meat in meals rather than scarfing it down like last time. It’s been lasting us a while and making our boring meals more exciting. I love the variety of all the products. Our final the Very Good Butchers review, is five stars! I’ll write another article once we try the cheese as well. In the meantime, don’t hesitate to buy yourself a box.
