I read Overture by Skye Warren back in December 2019 but I never got around to reviewing it. Part of me was embarrassed that I even read it, to be honest. Like many things that I buy, I discovered Skye Warren in a Facebook ad. While I am an avid reader, erotica is not my go-to genre. I had just read Adultery by Paulo Coelho so I guess that’s why Facebook’s algorithm decided to send this ad to me.
What Facebook doesn’t know (who am I kidding, it knows everything) is that I love the piano and wish I played more violin, guitar, the list goes on. So when I saw the ad that showed me books with beautiful cover art showing musical instruments, I clicked buy before reading the descriptions. I bought the entire trilogy, plus a different series by the author called Endgame because of the pretty chess pieces on the cover. Yes, I judged the books by their covers. Sue me.
Overture by Skye Warren Synopsis
“The world knows Samantha Brooks as the violin prodigy. She guards her secret truth—the desire she harbors for her guardian.
Liam North got custody of her six years ago. She’s all grown up now, but he still treats her like a child. No matter how much he wants her.
No matter how bad he aches for one taste.
Her sweet overtures break down the ex-soldier’s defenses, but there’s more at stake than her body. Every touch, every kiss, every night. The closer she gets, the more exposed his darkest secret.
She’s one step away from finding out what happened the night she lost her family. One step away from leaving him forever.”

What I Liked About the Book
I’ll admit that I really enjoyed the book and I read it in just a few hours. I happened to be on a four hour bus ride, but it’s still rare for me to get through an entire book in one sitting. Another thing to note, is that I have read almost 50 books since I read this one and I still remember exactly what happens and all the characters. There are books that I read a month ago that are already blurring at the edges. Despite the 50 Shades of Gray vibes, Overture is unique and clearly memorable.
Overture by Skye Warren did a fantastic job at building up anticipation. We all knew what was going to happen, but they made us beg for it on our knees. Finally, when it happen, it was satisfying and not rushed. I find it rare when books get the balance of buildup and the climax just to my liking, and Overture succeeded.
Obviously, I’m not the only one who was impressed because the book is currently rated 3.99 on Goodreads. It even has better ratings than 50 Shades of Gray! But you have to consider the number of reviewers before you judge. Speaking of 50 Shades…
What I Didn’t Like
This book was clearly inspired by 50 Shades, which isn’t necessarily bad but it made it feel less unique. The similarities include the innocent girl and the disturbed mysterious guy. Maybe this is super common in erotica and I just don’t read enough of it? Feel free to educate me in the comment section below.
Just like 50 Shades, North Security is a trilogy. Although I managed to get through two and a half chapters of the 50 Shades books, I couldn’t make it past a few chapters of the second North Security book. Concerto, the sequel, is actually rated better on Goodreads, so I may try to read it again. However, I have approximately 200 books on my TBR list so it might be a while. Plus, I need to be in a certain kind of mood for this genre.
Summary
Overture by Skye Warren was an unexpected read for me. I was surprised that I picked it up and read it in the first place, but I was also surprised by how much I enjoyed it. Despite the inappropriate story line, which is kind of the point of the book, I didn’t cringe as much as I expected to. If this was real life, I would probably feel a little differently, but that’s the beauty of fiction. Grab your copy on Amazon, or purchase the entire trilogy like I did!
