What came first, lumbersexuals or axe throwing bars? Whatever the answer, I now regret not dressing up more appropriately on my adventure to throw axes. There’s always next time! My first time axe throwing was in Lincoln, Rhode Island at the Axe Bar – R1 Indoor Karting.

I first heard of axe throwing years ago and discovered that it was typically done at bars. While alcohol and sharp weapons doesn’t seem like the wisest idea, it is so much fun! Although we went during dry January, we couldn’t help taking a peek at all the amazing draft beer options. This particular axe bar even had their own brew created for them by Revival!

You can go throw axes at the Axe Bar by yourself or in groups of up to 16 people. Prices start at $25 per person for 30 minutes and the bigger the group, the longer your time. While 30 minutes for two people doesn’t sound like a lot of time, it was exhausting.

We were at a booth with two targets and a basket with two large and two small axes. We could throw simultaneously and just had to make sure not to throw if the other person was retrieving their axe. Obviously, waivers were signed and safety is their number one rule.

Before we started, the friendly staff gave us instructions and taught us how to throw properly. Throughout the entire 30 minutes, she would go from group to group to make sure we were all okay. She would also give us tips on how to throw better and it really helped!

How hard is axe throwing?

I posted photos of videos of our best throws on Facebook and people were shocked. How could we possible manage to hit the bulls eye? Have we secretly practiced axe throwing our entire lives? Did we cheat to fake the good shots? No. No. No. Axe throwing is so much easier than it looks!

I’m not saying that you can hand me an axe and I can hit a moving car from 20 meters away. But I did hit the target on my first try. Keeping the correct form and following through was all it took to throw the axe precisely. Even when I got tired after about 100 throws, I still managed to hit the target over 80% of the time. If I can do it, you can do it!

What are you still doing here? Go sign up to throw some axes. If you’re in Rhode Island, definitely check out this bar in Lincoln. They also offer indoor karting. If you’re still unsure, watch us throw axes in the video below:
