Book Review: I’m a Therapist, and My Patient is Going to be the Next School Shooter

Facebook has discovered that I am a bookworm and is now bombarding me with ads for all sorts of books. My husband is upset, my wallet is upset but I am so excited to get so many cool suggestions! One of them was I’m a Therapist, and My Patient is Going to be the Next School Shooter. This book made me stop in my scrolling tracks and do a double take. I also knew immediately that it would be great for a book review article.

“What did I just read?” I said out loud when I saw the title. The controversial title alone made me excited to learn more about the book. I ordered it immediately and then looked at Goodreads. Uh oh, other readers didn’t love it. But most of the books I like get unfair reviews. I decided to pick it up and give it a chance the moment it arrived on my doorstep. I’ve been dying to write the book review the moment I finished reading.

Synopsis:

“I’ve seen it all… A boy who planned to be the next school shooter. A patient with OCD whose loved ones really did suffer every time he missed a ritual. A choir boy who claimed he was being molested — not by a priest — but by God Himself. A patient with PTSD who gave me nightmares. A husband and wife who accused each other of abuse, and only one of them was telling the truth.

And how could I ever forget, Patient #220.

The problem is, my patients have a habit of dying. Sometimes I wonder if I’m the common denominator. Or maybe that’s just the cost of taking on exceptionally broken clients.

Either way, I’ll never stop trying to help.”

Forehead Wrinkles

This book may be responsible for some of my new wrinkles. It was a quick read, but the entire two hours that it took for me to read it, I was either frowning or making other wrinkle-causing faces. When I finished the book I said the same thing I did when I first saw the add, “What did I just read?” I hope this book review doesn’t give you wrinkles in turn.

Rating: 3.5 out of 5.

What I Liked

Let me start with saying that I did not love this book but I also didn’t hate it. It was so different and unique that I’m super impressed. But there’s a lot that I really didn’t like… but I’ll get to that a little later.

I really loved how unique the story was… I haven’t read all the books in the world but I’m confident that there is nothing like this out there. It was really bizarre, in a good way, and super extreme. There were more twists that one could possibly imagine. The number of them is even more impressive given the shortness of this book.

The author of this book, Dr. Harper, is a fictional character so the book is published anonymously. You can find out more about this character on their website. Disclaimer, they are not a real licensed therapist. Throughout the book we learn a lot about Dr. Harper and that is a big part of the story.

Also, despite the quick pace and moving from one story to the next, I promise that it makes sense in the end. Things really do get tied together in the end so be patient and keep reading. You will hate the book if you don’t finish it. Well, you might hate it even if you do. Speaking of hate, let me get to what I didn’t love.

What I Didn’t Like

This should have been a longer book. It felt extremely rushed and it made me feel like I was on a roller coaster. In a not so good way, although it was still exciting. Kinda like, when you’re nauseous and scared, but you’re still trying to enjoy it while wondering if it’s almost over.

There were many parts of the story that were confusing. The plot is quite complex and that’s okay, but it could have been better explained. It was interesting but also a bit too much. It could have been simplified or explained things better without taking anything away from the book.

The characters, including the protagonist were all quite extreme. To the point that they weren’t quite believable. When you pair extreme characters with a complex plot and a rushed pace, things don’t always go well. It was all too much and I was shell-shocked when I got to the end. Let me compare it to a roller coaster again, where you get off and are standing on solid ground but you still feel like you are moving or unstable.

Do I Recommend this Book

YES! I had my husband read it right after me and he agrees. This book is crazy, weird, flawed, unique and words are just not sufficient enough to describe it adequately. But all the positive things about it make it a book that I would most definitely recommend.

I also ordered the sequel and there is a third book too! This is a great book to read on the beach, or if you just want a quick read. I wouldn’t call it scary but it definitely messes with your brain and the twists are as twisty as they get. If you want to read something different, please pick up a copy right now! As long as you don’t take it too seriously, you will enjoy this roller coaster of a book. Yes, I realize that this book review is almost as weird as the book itself.
