What My Sister Knew by Nina Laurin: Book Review

What My Sister Knew by Nina Laurin, What My Sister Knew by Nina Laurin: Book Review, The Travel Bug Bite

What My Sister Knew by Nina Laurin is the third book I read by this author. The Starter Wife and Girl Last Seen were both great reads and this book was no different. This story had two timelines. One where Andrea is a teenager and another where she is an adult. Andrea’s twin brother Eli went to prison for a fire that killed their parents. What will happen now that he has been released?

What My Sister Knew by Nina Laurin Synopsis

“We’re not just siblings, we’re twins. We’re supposed to be able to read each other’s thoughts. Although Eli is a few minutes younger, he always seemed older, always one step ahead.

It turns out that Eli kept many secrets. And he told many lies. So although he was once seen as the golden child-while I stood by as the silent sister-his web of deception led to a guilty verdict for the arson that killed our parents.

Now his thirteen-year sentence has been served, and Eli is free. But we are still bound by a secret. Which is dangerous because he has nothing left to lose, and I have everything.”

Goodreads

What I Liked

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Andrea is a fascinating character with a lot of flaws that I can relate to. She is angry and scared. Except unlike me, she has a good reason to be. Her brother not only killed her parents but left her covered in burns. In addition to that, she was violently bullied at school. Anyway, I really enjoyed delving deep into this character.

The story may not have been unique, but Nina Laurin made it original nonetheless. There were so many intricate details and, as always, they all come together in the end. I would definitely recommend this book, although Girl Last Seen remains my favorite by this author.

What I Didn’t Like

I can’t quite put my finger on what I didn’t like about this story. I gave it a four out of five star review for a reason. But it’s hard to explain. Perhaps it was the writing and the way the story was told? Something about the execution didn’t quite click with me. I actually felt similarly about The Starter Wife.

Summary

This is a great read and it didn’t take me long to finish the book. Despite its shortcomings, I read it in just a few days while sitting out in my backyard. It was an easy and enjoyable read with some great twists. Although I did predict a few things, the book still surprised me and kept me guessing.
