The mighty cucumber is a fascinating food item. I say food item because there is a debate on whether it is a fruit or a vegetable. Kind of like the tomato… although if you ask Google then there’s no question. Google doesn’t have time for your fruit vs. veggie debate. But it is more important than you could ever imagine. They can curie a hangover, bad breath and even cellulite.
Cucumbers: Delicious & Nutritious
Because cucumbers are 96% water, they do not contain as many nutrients as drier vegetables. Despite this, they contain most of the vitamins you need every day. Just one cucumber contains Vitamin B1, Vitamin B2, Vitamin B3, Vitamin B5, Vitamin B6, Folic Acid, Vitamin C, Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Potassium and Zinc.
Since they are so full of goodness, they are a great alternative to caffeine for energy. Cucumbers are a good source of B Vitamins and Carbohydrates that can provide that quick pick-me-up that can last for hours. If you’re anything like me and don’t like the bland taste, just sprinkle a little salt on a cucumber. It makes it less healthy but more chip-like. YUM!

Although I have never tried it, freezing a cucumber can allow you to use it as a hammer. But that’s not actually practical and sounds a little dangerous. Turns out there are other uses for this fruitable around the house. As well as in the garden – slices of cucumber in a pie tin apparently smell disgusting to various pests because of it’s chemical reaction with the aluminum.

Cucumbers can also have surprising super powers that involve keeping mirrors fog-free and hinges from squeaking. Both require you to rub a slice of cucumber on said surface. Other places to rub cucumbers on are cellulite – it causes the collagen in your skin to tighten, firming up the outer layer and reducing the visibility of cellulite. Works great on wrinkles too!
Cool as a Cucumber: Destress
If you cut up an entire cucumber and place it in a boiling pot of water, the chemicals and nutrients from the cucumber with react with the boiling water. They will be released in the steam, creating a soothing, relaxing aroma that has been shown the reduce stress in new mothers and college students during final exams.
If having bad breath stresses you out, a cucumber can help you there, also. Take a slice of cucumber and press it to the roof of your mouth with your tongue for 30 seconds. This will eliminate bad breath! How? The phytochemcials will kill the bacteria in your mouth responsible for causing bad breath.
Cucumbers are fascinating foods, wether you see them as fruits or veggies. They are bizarre in percentage of water yet amount of vitamins.
