Kedarkantha Trek is one of the famous Himalayan Treks present in India. The Kedarkantha Trek got its name from the popular Kedarkantha mountain peak which is located in the Uttarakhand and falls in the Himalayan Mountain Belt. Kedarkantha is basically reported to be found within the Govind Wildlife Sanctuary located in the Uttarkashi district.
Kedarkantha is situated at an elevation of about 13,500 ft above the mean sea level which is approximately 4,100 m. The source range of the Kedarkantha is Garhwal Himalaya mountain range.
Kedarkantha Trek has now become one of the popular trekking sites for winter trekking. This trekking route has also achieved the title “ Queen of Winter Treks”. The Kedarkantha Trekking route is full of natural landscapes. Being situated at a higher altitude region, this trekking route provides opportunities for the trekkers to enjoy the amazing views of the high mountains, clouds kissed peaks, forests, and many beautiful spots.
The Kedarkantha trekking route will require 5-6 days to complete. The total trekking length is considered as 20 km. The difficulty level of the Kedarkantha Trekking route ranges from easy to medium.
Best time to do Kedarkantha Trek
The temperature may vary from 8 to 15 degrees during the Day and -5 to 3 degrees at night. Many trekkers believe that the best time to enjoy this beautiful trekking journey starts from November to April. The starting point of this journey is Sankri Village.

Kedarkantha Trek Itinerary
Day 1: From Dehradun to Sankri
The trekkers first need to reach Dehradun by either Train, Air, or Roadways. After reaching Dehradun, one has to start their journey towards the Sankri village. The total driving distance will be around 187 km and the duration will be between 6 to 7 hours at the most. The elevation will be 1950 m. During the trekking, trekkers will come across the beautiful pine forests, grasslands. They will trek alongside the Tons and Yamuna river directions. After an hour’s journey, Sankri village will be reached. The camping site will be Sankri village.
Day 2: From Sankri Village to Juda ka Talab
The total trekking length will be 4 km and the duration to complete the trek will be approximately 3 to 4 hours. The trekking route will reach an elevation of 2786 m.
The trekkers will start their journey towards Juda ka Talab after having their breakfast. The natives believe that Lord Shiva once unlocked a small lock of his hair and the water that has dripped down from his hair led to the formation of this mighty lake. The trekkers will come across many villages, and high suspension bridges. The camping will be done at Juda ka Talab. Dinners will be served later at night.
Day 3: From Juda ka Talab to Kedarkantha Base camp
The trekking length from Juda to Kedarkantha base camp will be approximately 4km. The trekkers will trek for 4 to 5 hours. The elevation will rise to an altitude of about 3430 m above the mean sea level. The trekkers will experience the beautiful snow laded pathways, mountains, and their peaks like Bandarpoonch, Kala nag, Swargarohini, and Ranglana. The trekking route will be a bit difficult because of the snow-covered roads and higher elevations. There are several Gujjar huts that can be found along the trek and they can be used in case of emergencies or extreme weather conditions. Camping is to be done at Kedarkantha.
Day 4: From Kedarkantha Base camp to Kedarkantha Summit
The trek length will be 6km and it will take 6 to 7 hours to complete. The trekkers need to start their trek early in the morning around 2 am. The reason is to get the beautiful view of the Sunrise that will pass down from the mountain ranges of Gangotri and Yamunotri. After seeing the summit the trekkers will head back to the base camp.
Day 5: From the Kedarkantha Base camp towards Sankri
The trekking length will be 6km and the duration will be approximately 4 to 5 hours. The elevation will come down to 1950m. The trekkers will start their journey after having their breakfasts and will reach Sankri by afternoon. Camping will be done at Sankri.
Day 6: From Sankri to Dehradun
This is the last day of the trip. After reaching Dehradun in the afternoon, the trekkers will bid farewell and be off for their respective destinations.
