Nine Perfect Strangers by Liane Moriarty: Book Review

Nine Perfect Strangers, Nine Perfect Strangers by Liane Moriarty: Book Review, The Travel Bug Bite

Nine Perfect Strangers is my favorite book by Liane Moriarty. You may gasp and say, “but what about Big Little Lies?” Meh, I enjoyed it but I didn’t fall head over heels for it. It also took me a few tries to get into. Nine Perfect Strangers, on the other hand, had me hooked from the start. Imagine my shock to see that it has THE worst reviews of any of Liane Moriarty book on Goodreads. Heathens! Let me tell you why I loved it.

Well first, let me tell you what it’s about:

“Nine people gather at a remote health resort. Some are here to lose weight, some are here to get a reboot on life, some are here for reasons they can’t even admit to themselves. Amidst all of the luxury and pampering, the mindfulness and meditation, they know these ten days might involve some real work. But none of them could imagine just how challenging the next ten days are going to be.”

Goodreads

While none of the protagonists have too much in common with me, it was easy to relate to their mental struggles in life. We all occasionally feel completely defeated and THEN get kicked while we’re already down which results in us pulling over and screaming in our cars. Right? This will be very embarrassing if it’s just me. Oh well, Liane Moriarty gets me so I’m okay!

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Without giving away too many spoilers, let me just tell you that this is not your normal resort. All of the characters seem a little kooky but nothing is as crazy as the story itself. It all seemed quite normal until suddenly everything changes. My husband can vouch for me being a quiet reader, occasionally chucking or shaking my head. This book had me yelling out loud and rereading scenes for my very confused hubby and two doggos.

The moment the crazy starts, it just. Doesn’t. Stop. It gets more and more bizarre and weirdly awesome. I assume that this is why people don’t love the book? Maybe it’s too extreme and strange for them? Well those people can go worship Big Little Lies all they want. This book shows the extent of Moriarty’s imagination and I loved absolutely everything about it. THIS is the book they should remake into a TV show, and Robin Wright (Claire Underdwood from House of Cards) better play Masha.
