Behind Closed Doors by B.A. Paris: Book Review

Behind Closed Doors, Behind Closed Doors by B.A. Paris: Book Review, The Travel Bug Bite

This book was recommended to be by another avid reader of psychological thrillers. She mentioned it to me with a warning, saying that Behind Closed Doors by B.A. Paris was dark. I laughed. After all, I grew up watching horror movies. Not just the typical ones like the Ring. I saw some pretty horrible stuff. So I wasn’t worried about reading a book that was darker than usual.

Just as I was warned, this was a very dark books. But it was also a great book and I recommend it to anyone who likes psych thrillers or books with twists and turns. I finished this book within a weekend because I couldn’t tear myself away. My husband read it after me and he got though just as quickly despite being a slower reader. It’a a hard book to put down despite the scenes that make you want to look away.

What is it About?

“Everyone knows a couple like Jack and Grace. He has looks and wealth, she has charm and elegance. You might not want to like them, but you do.

You’d like to get to know Grace better.

But it’s difficult, because you realise Jack and Grace are never apart.

Some might call this true love. Others might ask why Grace never answers the phone. Or how she can never meet for coffee, even though she doesn’t work. How she can cook such elaborate meals but remain so slim. And why there are bars on one of the bedroom windows.

Sometimes, the perfect marriage is the perfect lie.

This book has some pretty great characters. Obviously Jack and Grace are fascinating but so is Grace’s sister Millie who has down syndrome. I really loved that this book took on the topic of disability and how Millie is constantly underestimated. She was one of my favorite characters in the entire book.

Rating: 5 out of 5.

It’s hard for me to say much more without revealing spoilers. The writing is great, the characters are captivating and the story is as unique as it is disturbing. Unfortunately, not everyone loved it as much as I did. It only has 3.95 stars on Goodreads and those who didn’t like it, REALLY didn’t like it.

I don’t think reviews are a good way to decide if you should or shouldn’t read a book. There are so many haters who nit-pick every detail. Then there’s easy to please readers like me who love just about everything. I have loved books with bad reviews and hated books with great reviews. Don’t get sucked into the bias and decide the book after reading it yourself.
