The plot of a mother not liking her son’s new love interest may not be completely unique. However, Sandie Jones takes it to the next level! Every time I thought I knew where it was going, something unexpected would happen. It wasn’t just the bigger aspects of the plot that had twists but the smaller things as well, which kept things exciting.
What I Loved
I loved the conflict between Emily and Pammie, Adam’s mother. The subtle sass and cattiness was really well-executed. It was great to see Pammie go after Emily even in front of Adam without him noticing. From personal experiences, men can definitely be clueless about things like this even if you try to explain them. Luckily, my mother-in-law is not a Pammie, but I have had people insult me in front of my husband without him noticing.
Other than the great relationships between the characters, I also loved the progression of the story. It was exciting from page one and it never lulled. I had trouble finding a good place to pause when it was time to go to bed, or return to work from my lunch break. It only took me two day for me to finish. If it ever comes out as a movie, I’ll watch that too!
What I Didn’t Love
Maybe it’s just my imagination, but I feel like the male characters in this story weren’t quite as developed as the female ones. This could be because the author is female or that the focus is simply on the women so the men fall into the background. There is nothing else for me to criticize, so if I had to say one negative thing, that would be it. At the same time, it didn’t bother me and I loved everything else.
Other readers were, as always, more critical than me. The Other Woman was rated 3.77 out of 5 on Goodreads. Critics complains that there was a lack of substance and that the book was boring. I did not have the same experience and there were many others who gave it five star reviews!
