The Starter Wife by Nina Laurin: Book Review

I discovered The Starter Wife by Nina Laurin purely coincidentally. It was abandoned along with with another book near a trashcan on a rainy day. Shame on whoever left it there, but one person’s trash is another’s treasure! Girl Last Seen was a great book and the moment I finished it, I ordered The Starter Wife. While I enjoyed reading this book, I can’t say I loved it.

“I close the online search window, annoyed. These articles never have enough detail. They think my husband’s first wife disappeared or they think she is dead. There’s a big difference.

My phone rings, jarring me away from my thoughts, and when I pick it up, it’s an unknown number. The only answer to my slightly breathless hello is empty static.

When the voice does finally come, it’s female, low, muffled somehow. “Where is it, Claire? What did you do with it? Tell me where it is.”

A woman. A real flesh-and-blood woman on the other end of the phone. She’s not just in my head.

A wave of panic spreads under my skin like ice water. It’s Colleen.”

What I Loved

Rating: 3.5 out of 5.

Loved is a strong word for a book that I almost forgot about in two weeks. I can still describe the other book I read by this author in perfect detail and it has been two months since I read it. But I didn’t hate this book. I liked the story, the twists were completely unexpected! The ending was super unpredictable too. It was a fun book to read.

What I Didn’t Love

I read this book a week ago and I have read about three books since then. When I picked it up again for the review I remembered a lot of the plot. What I didn’t remember was the ending. I actually had to Google it to get a refresher. Definitely not a good sign.

Other than not being memorable, it was also a little confusing. I had trouble following what was happening and was completely lost at times. Compared to the other book I read by Nina Lauren, Girl Last Seen, I wasn’t as into the protagonist or any of the characters in this book. That being said, I did read it in two sittings and enjoyed the story.

  1. Can someone please explain? Are there two crazy women here? Who is stalking Claire (Tracey)? I’m so confused?
