Renting a sailboat in Newport is a great way to spend a day enjoying all the most beautiful ocean views. Keep in mind that this is for people who know how to sail already; it’s not like a paddle or row boat. A lot of skill is involved and they will test you beforehand. Plus, if anything goes wrong, they will hold you responsible if you damage the rental, someone else’s boat or any property along the way.
Isaac and I have not been hiding our secret sailing talents from you – our friend Patrick is an experienced sailer and organized the whole thing. Picture Isaac, myself and our new friend Jenn wide-eyed as Captain Patrick tilts the boat to safe but uncomfortable angles. Spoiler alert: we did NOT capsize, break any laws or even fall in. It was all smooth sailing and perfect weather!
Renting a Sailboat in Newport
We rented our sailboat from Sail Newport, a popular rental place for sailing enthusiasts. They don’t just do rentals – they also offer classes for adults as well as children of all ages. Even though it’s already chilly, they offer classes and rentals through October! If you are lucky enough to get a sunny day, the sun will keep you warm while you sail around. We spent three hours sailing and I was not dressed warmly, yet I managed to stay warm. I do recommend that you bundle up so that you make most of your experience!
There are a few rules that you need to be aware of before you go. Some are COVID specific:
The checkout comes with a simple test that shows that you are a skilled sailor and know how to be safe on a boat:
“An annual on-the-water check-out by a member of Sail Newport’s instructional staff is required of everyone who comes to use our fleet, regardless of years of experience. The check out is typically done right before you rent the first time each season, and is our chance to see that you have sufficient skills to sail the boat safely and appropriately in the conditions, as well as to familiarize you with our boats, procedures and rules, and the sailing area.
The check-out typically takes 10-20 minutes. If you have any questions about whether you have the necessary skills to pass the check-out, please give us a call. Our staff would be more than happy to discuss this with you!”Sail Newport

Location & Contacts
You can find the location and contact info below. Once you rent the boat you will have few limitations of where to go. We decided to go close to the Newport Bridge while we could have gone towards Castle Hill – near the restaurant where we ate recently, The Safari Room. We weren’t being lazy but it still took us three hours to go all the way to the bridge and back. So don’t underestimate the winds when managing your time.
