The Pub at Matunuck: Beach Dining, Rhode Island

We ate and drank at The Pub at Matunuck this past weekend. Our friend Patrick wanted to check out the surf but the rest of us wanted to stay out of the freezing water. Isaac, Jenn and I wanted to find a spot to relax while still watching the surfers. It was a super busy area with illegally parked cars collecting tickets – we would have gotten in trouble too if it weren’t for the police officer warning us just as we parked. The bars were just as busy, Ocean Mist, the most popular spot, had a 90 minute wait! We were so excited to discover The Pub at Matunuck right next door.

About The Pub at Matunuck

COVID-19 beware, The Pub at Matunuck doesn’t take safety precautions lightly. Masks are mandatory but they also make sure that once you sit down, you don’t move around. I got up to take a photo just a few feet from table and was asked to stay seated. Someone walked across the deck without a mask and was asked to put it on. It was great to see a place take our safety seriously and the reminders are welcome because it’s easy to forget that we are in the middle of a pandemic sometimes. When I see a perfect ocean view, I forget just about anything!

There isn’t too much information online about the history of The Pub, which I have noticed is common with many local restaurants. Apparently, it’s a European thing to write an essay outlining the complex history of a bar or restaurant on the back of the menu? All I could find out was…

“Legend has it we are one of the oldest Irish bars in America. Located in Matunuck Rhode Ireland right on the sandy beach. We have delicious food, cold beer and an unbelievable view!  We also have our heated rooftop deck which  remains one of South Counties hidden Gems!  We are open 7 days a week and always till 1 am!”

Food & Drinks

Even though this is just a pub and all this craziness is going on in the world, they still have a pretty good menu. They have soups including clam chowder, various wraps, sandwiches, burgers, and of course, typical bar foods such as wings, fries and onion rings. You can find their full menu here. Like any pub on the beach, the focus is seafood, however there are plenty of veggie options here too. Of course, as a pub, they have a great selection of beers, cocktails and other drinks. I LOVED their Oktoberfest beer, it was a much needed taste of home!

The View

Despite the awesome staff and great menu, my favorite thing by far is the view. Fine, the Octoberfest beer is a very close second… but LOOK. I stole these photos from their website and they make me want to go back for sunset. We sat just about where the lady with the blue cocktail is and now I am craving a pretty blue cocktail at 7AM on a Tuesday. Basically, The Pub at Matunuck is ruining my life – by being amazing and too far away from where I live.

Summary: The Pub at Matunuck

I am so glad that Ocean Mist was all booked up, because The Pub at Matunuck was a hidden gem that we would have otherwise overlooked. It is right next door and offers truly spectacular views. The spot we sat at let us spy on the surfers while staying warm under the sun. Part of the structure is built on stilts so the waves were literally under us! I highly recommend visiting The Pub at Matunuck. It may just be one of my new favorite spots that I hope to visit often next summer.
