I Let You Go by Clare Mackintosh may have a slow start but it accelerates to the speed of light. At once point, I found myself getting bored and I almost put it down. I am so glad I stuck to it because WOW, this book blew me away. Also, I have to do something that isn’t generally acceptable. I’m going to compare this book to Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn. So many the books claim to be Gone Girl meets Girl on the Train meets The Silent Patient… however THIS book, is actually worthy of the comparison.

What I Loved About It
From the beginning the story pulled at my heart strings. I am not a mother but one of my biggest fears is seeing someone I love get killed in a hit-and-run. From there I became more and more interested in the book. One strange thing that I loved, as much as the storyline itself, was what Jenna started doing for a living. It’s not a huge spoiler, but I won’t reveal it. It put a huge smile on my face and made me love the book even more.
It’s hard to rave about this book without revealing anything. But let’s just say that I literally shrieked when I reached Part 2. And I’m the kinda person who has a resting bitch face, even while writing ‘haha’ or ‘LOL’ on social media. I love that there was such a major twist early on in the book. It made it impossible for me to put the book down.
I honestly loved everything about I Let You Go: the great writing, the characters, the twists, the story. I read a lot of books in this genre and few things truly shock me. This book managed to surprise me and keep me guessing until the very end – and then some…
What I Didn’t Love About It
THE ENDING! Ugh. I’m not the only one who didn’t like the ending. It was ambiguous and other readers complained about it on Goodreads. Clare Mackintosh actually responded saying that there will not be a sequel to I Let You Go and it’s a shame. The ending IS conclusive but not 100% clear. Plus, there are things outside of the main plot that the author spent so long writing about but didn’t include a satisfying ending to. I really thought that there would be a sequel until I looked it up. I’m hoping that the author will still change her mind because there’s clearly more to the story, so why not explore it?
