I discovered Deviant Donuts on Instagram, in a comment of a post by a vegan group. Someone had posted a photo of 10 beautiful donuts that were a special for vegan week. I decided to look up this amazing place, expecting it to be too far for me to visit. However, Deviant Donuts is in Mystic, Connecticut, just an hour drive from my home in Rhode Island! And yes… driving an hour for these donuts is worth it.
Deviant Craft Coffee & Donuts
Deviant Craft Coffee & Donuts is a small-batch gourmet donut and craft coffee shop located in the Olde Mistick Village in Mystic, CT. They were established late fall 2017 as a pop-up shop in their sister shop Vault Coffee. Deviant Donuts is small but have their ear against the pulse of the latest trends and interests, making sure to take all suggestions we receive and implement them into future projects.
They make everything by hand – from each filling, to the glazes, all the way up to every garnish. Each idea is carefully crafted and tested to assure the best possible quality. They love to bring local providers on board for collaborations including our friends Full Heart Farm (Ledyard), Beer’d Brewing Company (Stonington), Saltwater Farm Vineyard (Stonington), Thimble Island Brewery (Brantford) and Terra Firma Farm (Stonington).
Vegan & Gluten Sensitive
We happened to visit during vegan week, but Deviant Donuts always has at least one vegan option and another that is gluten free. This week is Harry Potter week and this is their menu. This link will take you to their weekly menu, whatever it may be! They obviously get super creative with it.
When we went last week, we expected a regular donut store. What we saw was a super long line out the door! Deviant Donuts is VERY popular. You can skip the line by pre-ordering online. Things do sell out quick! Last week, they sold out of two of the vegan donuts we pre-ordered. This week it’s not even possible to pre-order at the moment because people like their Harry Potter!
Past Donut Themes
Just a few weeks ago they had Cats & Dogs Fundraiser!
Seriously, how amazing are these:
How do Deviant Donuts Taste?
Okay, the donuts are cute. But are they good? The answer is YES! These donuts are amazing. However, I should point out that out of the 10 I tried, they mostly tasted quite similar. Some were more chocolatey, some had more cinnamon, the matcha was very subtly matcha-flavored. However, the dough tasted similar in every donut. Which is a relief to me, because now I won’t be tempted to try one of each again. Although if we’re being honest, I probably still might!
Summary: Deviant Donuts
I am always trying to be healthier and lose weight, so I have mixed feelings about discovering Deviant Donuts. They are way too good and filled with calories. And even though they are an hour away, it’s too close for comfort. If you ever come here on a weekend, you may see me lined up and drooling, waiting to get whatever new donut theme of the week Deviant Donuts comes up with!
