July 11th is National All American Pet Photo Day! Who knew that I was incorrectly celebrating this day every day of the year? My bad. Today actually had five things to celebrate. This includes National 7-Eleven Day, National Blueberry Muffin Day, National Cheer Up the Lonely Day and National Rainer Cherry Day. I am finding all these on the National Day Calendar by the way. While I will try to celebrate all of these wonderful things today, I will focus on my dogs cause I’m a crazy dog mom.
Smiley and Pablo
Both of our dogs are rescues from the Brooklyn ACC in New York. We got Smiley in October 2018 and the story went quite viral on the Dodo. Long story short, we weren’t looking for a dog. We lived in a tiny apartment with grumpy neighbors. We wanted to be able to spontaneously travel and go out, without the responsibility of a dog. Plus, we were not financially secure after moving overseas and getting my Green Card. But… I was tipsy on the subway scrolling through facebook when I saw this:

The headline said, “I would have loved the baby, I don’t want to die,” which of course, made me cry instantly because I knew that we couldn’t save him. Isaac asked me why I was crying and I showed him. It took about five minutes for me to convince him that we can at least foster him to save him. We had always talked about rescuing pit bulls and here was one that needed rescuing. I commented on the long thread saying “I will take him!”
Next day, the rescue managed to get him an hour before euthanasia and our ‘no pets’ landlord gave us permission to bring him home. Smiley turned out to be perfect and super friendly. He pushed us to move out of Brooklyn and settle down in a house in Rhode Island. In June 2019, we brought home another rescue, Pablo. Pablo was already fostered and living with other dogs, so we knew he would was dog friendly. They were great together when they met so we brought him home.
